Should teeth be whitened before composite bonding?
If you are considering both teeth whitening and composite bonding, the order in which you do them matters — and getting it wrong can mean your bonding does not match your whitened teeth.
Why whitening should come first
Composite resin does not respond to whitening products. The shade of composite used for bonding is matched to your tooth colour at the time it is placed. If you whiten your teeth after bonding, your natural teeth will lighten but the composite will not — creating a visible mismatch that is difficult to correct without replacing the bonding.
How long to wait after whitening
After whitening, teeth can remain temporarily dehydrated, which affects how well composite bonds to them and how accurately colour can be assessed. Most dentists recommend waiting at least two weeks after completing whitening before having bonding placed, to allow the shade to stabilise. Your dentist will advise the right interval for your case.
What if you have existing bonding?
If you already have composite bonding and want to whiten your teeth, be aware that the bonding will not change shade with whitening. This may create a colour difference depending on how much natural tooth is visible alongside the bonding. Discuss this with your dentist before starting whitening.
When the sequence is different
There are some situations where the standard sequence may vary — for example, if bonding is needed urgently or if only certain teeth are being treated. Your dentist will consider your individual situation and advise on the most appropriate approach.
Combining both treatments effectively
Many patients achieve excellent results combining whitening and bonding — a lighter, brighter shade overall, with bonding refining specific shapes, chips or edges. The key is planning both treatments together from the start, rather than adding one after the other has already been completed.
About this article
Treatment sequencing recommendations may vary between patients. Always consult your dentist before beginning whitening if you have existing composite bonding or are planning bonding treatment.
